Health & Safety Policy — Pressure Washing Clapham Services
Purpose: This Health and Safety policy sets out the standards and procedures for safe operation of Pressure Washing Clapham and related services, including power washing, pressure-cleaning and site-based waste handling in our rubbish company service area. The policy commits to protecting employees, clients, the public and the environment through proactive risk control, clear responsibilities and ongoing training. This document applies to all staff, subcontractors and operatives engaged in pressure wash, power wash and pressure wash maintenance work.
Scope and Objectives
The policy covers pre-job planning, site surveys, equipment safety, use of detergents, containment of runoff, waste management and emergency response. Our objective is to ensure a safe workplace by preventing injury, minimising property damage and ensuring that environmental impacts are controlled, especially where operations interact with waste collection, rubbish removal or skip hire activities in the broader service area.
Accountabilities
Management will ensure adequate resources, competent personnel and regular audits. Supervisors are responsible for on-site enforcement of safe systems of work. Operatives must follow procedures, wear required PPE and report hazards. Clients and site owners must provide accurate site information and access to utilities. All staff will cooperate with monitoring and incident investigations.Risk Assessment & Pre-Work Checks
Before any pressure washer or power washer is mobilised, a documented risk assessment will be completed. This includes assessing surface conditions, slip/trip risks, access and egress, proximity to pedestrians, traffic management needs and potential interactions with waste storage or rubbish collection points. A permit-to-work or task briefing will be used for higher-risk jobs.Equipment checks are mandatory: pumps, hoses, lances, nozzles and fittings must be inspected daily. Faulty items are to be removed and tagged until repaired. Batteries, fuel and pressure systems must be maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and service area schedules to prevent failures during pressure-washing operations.

Personal Protective Equipment & Training
All operatives will be issued appropriate PPE, including but not limited to: non-slip footwear, eye protection, face shields, gloves resistant to chemicals and mechanical hazards, hearing protection and protective clothing. Training is provided for: safe use of pressure washers, spray control, chemical handling, manual handling and working near traffic or public walkways. Refresher training and competency assessments are scheduled annually.Safe Operating Procedures
Operatives must establish exclusion zones using signage and barriers where necessary, communicate clearly with site staff and the public, and always use correct nozzle sizes and pressures for the surface. Start-up and shut-down sequences, safe handling of hoses and secure storage of equipment when not in use are mandatory. Where high-pressure jetting could dislodge material, operatives will apply containment or vacuum measures to capture debris. For chemical detergents and cleaning agents, a clear control regime is in place. Substances are assessed for hazards and stored securely. Only approved cleaning products are to be used, and dilution rates must be followed to reduce harm. Spill kits and absorbents are kept on-site for immediate response.
Waste management is integrated with our rubbish company service area protocols: contaminated water, suspended solids and removed materials are segregated and disposed of in accordance with waste-handling procedures. When waste is collected or transferred, records are kept to demonstrate responsible disposal and to minimise environmental impact.
Environmental Protection & Runoff Control
Measures to prevent pollution include using containment booms, grates, silt bags and temporary soakaways to prevent contaminated water entering drainage systems. Where practical, work is scheduled to avoid heavy rainfall which could increase runoff. Operatives will divert clean water away from drains and use recovery systems for dirty water that requires treatment. We avoid working directly over vulnerable surfaces and protect landscaping, signage and adjacent properties. Where operations occur near waste storage, additional controls reduce cross-contamination between cleaning activities and rubbish handling sites. Regular checks ensure that environmental controls remain effective throughout the job.
Emergency Response & Incident Reporting
A clear emergency plan sets out actions for personal injury, chemical spill, equipment failure and unforeseen hazards. Emergency contacts and first-aid arrangements are communicated prior to starting work. All incidents, near misses and environmental releases must be reported without delay, recorded and investigated to identify root causes and preventive actions.

Monitoring, Audits & Compliance
We conduct routine site inspections, operational audits and toolbox talks to verify compliance with this policy. Performance indicators include accident rates, near-miss frequency, equipment defects and corrective action completion. Audits inform improvements to procedures and training. The policy aligns with applicable health, safety and environmental standards without giving legal advice herein.Subcontractors and Client Responsibilities
Subcontractors are required to follow this policy, demonstrate competency and provide their safety documentation. Clients must inform us of site-specific risks, utility locations and any waste management requirements. A coordinated approach ensures safe integration of pressure-cleaning activities with rubbish collection and waste removal operations in the service area.Review and Continuous Improvement: This Health and Safety policy is reviewed at regular intervals or after significant incidents, changes in equipment, or changes to the service area operations. Commitment to continuous improvement ensures safer pressure washing, power washing and pressure-cleaning practices for staff, customers and the wider community.
